Photocatalysis with Nickel


The functionalization of C–H bonds is a powerful synthetic strategy that can enable rapid access to molecular complexity from simple starting materials. A preeminent challenge in the field is the development of general, mild, stereo- and site-selective C(sp3)–H functionalization. The goal of our program is to develop a new platform for C(sp3)– H functionalization that decouples C(sp3)–H activation from functionalization by using photocatalysis to deliver free radical species from a C(sp3)–H coupling partner and Ni catalysis to functionalize the radical in a modular, site- and stereoselective manner. This lecture will describe our progress in this area, focused on the design, scope elucidation, and mechanistic investigation of the processes.
